ICON organized the 2008 conference which brought together users, developers, academics and industry managers. More than 120 delegates from over 16 countries assembled to hear presentations and exchange views. Topics discussed ranged from multi-phase flow to industrial optimisation. We look forward to another diverse mix of audience and presentations at the 2009 event.

The Conference was aimed at:

– Existing open source CFD software e.g. OpenFOAM^® users
– CFD Engineers seeking to investigate open source technology
– Industry Managers and IT Implementers
– Academia
– Technology Consultants

Amongst the industrial and academic contributors were key notes from Henry Weller from OpenCFD Ltd. discussing the Further Development of OpenFOAM, Jan Wildeboer of Red Hat who described Building Communities based on Open Standards and Open Source at Red Hat, alongside ICON who showed their FOAMpro GUI in their presentation on Open Source CFD in Practice – A Path to Industrial Scale Applications.

Press Release: “BEinGRID Project Launched to Implement and Deploy Grid solutions across the European Industry”

2007 saw the introduction of the OpenFOAM International Conference in London by ICON. The event brought together users, developers, academics and industry managers. More than 100 delegates from over 25 countries assembled to hear presentations and exchange views on topics ranging from multi-phase flow to industrial optimisation enabled by the versatile OPENFOAM toolbox.

The event highlighted new and unique capabilities of OpenFOAM^® and showed how CAE is advancing through adoption of the software.

The papers presented were from industrial and academic contributors. Key note addresses were provided by Henry Weller of OpenCFD^® Ltd. who discussed Aspects of OpenFOAM, Dr. Moni Islam of AUDI AG who addressed the Automatic Optimization of a Cooling Duct using OpenFoam and sharing the platform was ICON who presented the Integration of OpenFOAM into Industrial CAE Processes.

A long-standing co-operation with Airbus has seen ICON working on the design and improvement of ventilation systems for a number of different aircraft programmes such as the A380, A380-F, A340/330, A400M, A350XWB

In the case of the A380, Airbus’ next generation full double-deck passenger aircraft, the intention of this work was to:

– investigate the practicality of handling models for very
– develop an efficient work process including testing the
suitability of CD-adapco’s new STAR-CCM+ solver
– investigate the cabin flow field in a complete “closed”
domain by erasing the problems associated with additional
unknown boundary conditions
– investigate the flow in the stairhouses and its effect on the
adjacent cabin areas
